Arcadia

Former citrus groves on the south slope of Camelback, now one of Phoenix’s most rebuilt neighbourhoods.

Overview

Living in Arcadia

Arcadia grew out of citrus groves irrigated by the Arizona Canal, and the legacy shows: large lots, mature orange trees and lawns still watered by flood irrigation in parts of the neighbourhood. Camelback Mountain rises directly to the north.

Its restaurants — many in converted buildings along Camelback Road and 40th Street — and the canal path give Arcadia a walkable, local feel unusual in the Valley.

Homes & architecture

Original 1950s ranch homes on roughly half-acre to acre lots, many now remodelled or replaced with modern farmhouse and contemporary builds. Arcadia Lite, to the southwest, offers similar character on somewhat smaller lots.

Setting

East Phoenix, roughly between 44th and 68th Streets, south of Camelback Mountain toward Indian School Road.
